Sustainability
Sustainability is at the heart of our business. We are dedicated to driving responsible practices that effectively balance environmental, social, and economic factors, ensuring that our operations contribute positively to the communities we serve.

With decades of experience, WEIDA delivers innovative solutions across various sectors, including road construction, drainage, water supply, and sewerage. Our products play a crucial role in infrastructure development, providing clean water and sanitation through our water and wastewater systems.

Environmentally Responsible Practices

Environmentally Responsible Practices

Our commitment to sustainability extends to our manufacturing processes. WEIDA’s infrastructure polyethylene (PE) products have a lower carbon footprint compared to traditional materials such as iron and concrete. We run in-house sustainability programmes at our manufacturing plants, focusing on conserving energy and resources, reducing fossil fuel usage, and promoting green products.

Social Governance and Workplace Safety

Social Governance and Workplace Safety

WEIDA values social governance, prioritising a fair and safe workplace for our employees. Our ESG policies help us maintain a positive work environment while promoting sustainability objectives.

Our Business and SDGs
As part of our commitment to sustainability, we strive to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). Our businesses and operational activities directly support the following SDGs:
Good Health and Well-Being Gender Equality and Reduced Inequalities Clean Water and Sanitation Affordable and Clean Energy Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure Sustainable Cities and Communities Responsible Consumption and Production Climate Action Life Below Water Life on Land
Good Health and Well-Being

WEIDA promotes good health and well-being by developing, upgrading, and maintaining hospital facilities within the healthcare infrastructure sector.

Gender Equality and Reduced Inequalities

WEIDA believes that diversity, equity, and inclusion are crucial to the Group’s success and overall well-being.

A diverse workforce brings together different perspectives and ideas, promoting greater innovation and creativity.

WEIDA achieves 40% women participation in management roles.

Training and development are integral to WEIDA’s commitment to nurturing talent, enhancing employee capabilities, and driving organisational excellence. The Group recognises the importance of investing in its workforce through comprehensive training programmes tailored to the unique needs of each employee category. WEIDA places a strong emphasis on providing continuous learning opportunities for employees across all levels and functions.

Clean Water and Sanitation

Over the past 40 years, WEIDA has provided water and wastewater storage, treatment and conveyance solutions to both rural and urban communities in Sarawak.

WEIDA has been at the forefront of wastewater management, specialising in treating municipal wastewater from households and ensuring the safe treatment of effluent to prevent river pollution and promote clean water and sanitation. Properly managed wastewater is not only crucial for daily needs but also serves as a cornerstone for various economic industries.

Affordable and Clean Energy

WEIDA is a key player in the renewable energy business. We have supplied and installed solar PV farms to provide electricity to rural villages and support rural water treatment, while also manufacturing floating PV systems.

Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

WEIDA is committed to innovative products and construction methods that replace conventional products, which are inconsistent in quality, labour-intensive, and time-consuming to construct or install.

One such product is our FLOLINE 3W HDPE pipes, used as drainage solutions. Such pipes are quality-controlled, ready for fast installation and designed for optimal use to reduce waste.

Sustainable Cities and Communities

Rainwater harvesting with WEIDA’s PE storage tanks reduces the need for treated water and saves over 2 kilotons of CO2 each year, lowering overall carbon footprint.

WEIDA uses HDPE, a sustainable engineering construction material with the lowest embodied carbon (EC) among plastics. Its lighter weight compared to steel and concrete products results in a lower carbon footprint for equivalent HDPE products:

1) Using FLOLINE HDPE pipe culverts instead of concrete culverts saves over 1 kiloton of CO2 annually.

2) WEIDA helps the country save > 20 kilotons of CO2 annually by using HDPE water pipes instead of ductile iron pipes for water projects.

Proper wastewater management by WEIDA is critical for ensuring safe sanitation, safeguarding vital water resources from contamination, and reducing the spread of waterborne diseases, thereby supporting public health. It also plays a key role in building resilient infrastructure to withstand urban growth and enabling sustainable urbanisation.

Responsible Consumption and Production

WEIDA adopts sustainable manufacturing practices to reduce its CO2 footprint.

Rainwater Harvesting: Our factories collect, reuse, and recycle rainwater from building rooftops for cooling and non-potable water use.

Reduction of Fossil Fuel Use: We aim to reduce fossil fuel usage in manufacturing by 20% in 2025, switching to electrical processes and equipment.

Rooftop Solar: By 2025, we plan to use solar energy to meet 60% of our electricity needs from all factories in Malaysia with solar energy, saving 1.5 kilotons of CO2 annually.

WEIDA optimises available resources to reduce waste, such as recycling treated water for non-potable uses and minimising treated sewage sludge production by repurposing it through composting or as a soil enhancer. Our efforts contribute to sustainable wastewater management and support the Circular Economy.

Climate Action

WEIDA is committed to ongoing research and development efforts to identify and implement solutions that reduce carbon footprints and contribute to climate change mitigation.

Sustainable sludge management through resource recovery, such as converting waste into valuable raw materials, helps to reduce environmental impact and ensures long-term resource sustainability.

Life Below Water

Wastewater management efforts and practices are critical for restoring the ecological balance of our rivers and supporting the health of marine ecosystems.

WEIDA ensures that the municipal wastewater is properly treated to remove pollutants and pathogens before being released into the river. This helps prevent pollution in our waterways and preserves marine biodiversity.

Life on Land

Our Infrastructure products, including aquaculture cages, are designed for the purpose of rearing fish. They promote aquatic life by helping to reducing overfishing.

At WEIDA, we have been playing a pivotal role for over 20 years in ensuring that municipal wastewater is treated to the highest industry standards, safeguarding land and preventing soil and groundwater contamination.

Our dedicated approach effectively removes harmful pollutants, and we convert treated sewage sludge into valuable by-products, supporting sustainable waste management and reducing landfill waste.
